Jason Brown – A guide to Security and Ethics – Thales Group

Principal Advisor on Risk and Security to the Board of Directors, Thales Australia and New Zealand.  Before joining Thales in 2004, Jason had 27 years experience in Commonwealth Government with appointments which include;

Assistant Secretary – Defence Imagery and the Geospatial Organisation, Director General – Safety, Compensation and People Development, Assistant Secretary – Defence Security, Various appointments in the Attorney General’s Security portfolio in the areas of counter terrorism and security policy and investigations. He has served on a number of senior boards and committees in both the Public Sector and Private Institutions.

Jason has a number of publications in the areas of client service, risk management, event management, intelligence management and security.  He was awarded the Australian Security Medal for Conspicuous Service in February 2011.  In 2019 IFSEC International recognised him in the top 20 globally influential persons in Security and Fire Management.

Michael Phelan – Special Counsel, Kroll 

Michael is one of the most senior former law enforcement officers in Australia. He currently works as a special Counsel to Kroll, the leading independent provider of risk  and financial advisory solutions to corporate and government clients.

Michael Phelan was formerly Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC)  and Director of the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC), where he oversaw the development and maintenance of national information and intelligence sharing services through key initiatives. Michael has been employed in law enforcement for over 30 years, including service as Chief Police Officer ACT Policing and Deputy Commissioner for National Security at the Australian Federal Police.

Dr Shantala Mohan  –  Corruption Risk in academic research – Western Sydney University

Dr Shantala Mohan is responsible for managing the ethics and integrity team at Western Sydney University. In 2018 Dr Shantala Mohan led an institutional ethics review and implemented the review recommendations. Shantala played a key role in driving Western Sydney University’s submission to the Australian Research Council’s 2018 Engagement and Impact (EI) Assessment which was undertaken as part of the Australian Research Council’s National Innovation and Science Agenda. Her previous roles as Director, Research Strategy and Assistant Vice-Chancellor, enabled Shantala to acquire substantial leadership and report writing skills.

Kerry Tucker M.A. – From prisoner to PhD student

From prisoner to PhD student – how one woman turned her jail sentence into an opportunity. Kerry Tucker’s traumatic first night behind bars. After spending four-and-a-half years in a maximum-security prison, Kerry Tucker was released with a Master of Arts. She went on to get a doctorate and to become a lecturer at Swinburne University. She currently works for an educational institution in Melbourne and is a passionate advocate for educating women in prison.  Kerry is the author of a bestselling book, “The Prisoner”, which details how one woman turned her life around.

Cameron K Murray, the Author of “Rigged” Dr Cameron Murray is an economist with a passion for improving society. He specialises in property markets, resource and environmental economics, and corruption. His research on grey corruption in Australia has been transformed into a book called Game of Mates: How favours bleed the nation and his latest book Rigged.  [Video]. Phil O’Toole – Managing Director, Centium 

Phil is a respected strategist, adviser and thought leader in legislative compliance, business improvement, risk management, probity, assurance and ethical conduct across the public and private sectors. Previously, he had over 25 years’ experience in the NSW Public Sector, including several years as a Director in the NSW Attorney Generals Department. 

Phil is a former NSW Chapter Chair of the Institute of Internal Auditors Australia (IIA) and a regular Chair and presenter at conferences and seminars for various professional bodies. He has also been an expert witness for ICAC and judicial hearings. Phil has approved Baseline Security clearance.

The  Corruption Prevention Network’s “Recognising and Responding to Corruption Risks” one day forum will provide practitioners with insights and best practices by industry’s top experts through keynotes, panel discussions and interactive sessions.  We all need a little help from our friends and colleagues therefore attending the One- day Forum will enable you to network with others to help you better understand, identify, manage and prepare to meet emerging challenges.

With respect to CPE (continuing professional education), sign-in sheets will be provided to record your attendance and an attendance certificate will be issued to all delegates . Up to 7.5CPE hours are available.

No matter where a person works, we can all be faced with the prospect of being confronted by overt or covert corruption. Would you know what to do or where to report “suspicious behaviour” if  you observed it? Responding to alleged corruption in the community or workplace needs careful deliberation. Whistle blowing and reporting alleged corruption takes courage and none of us has all the answers. The CPN Forum can help answer some of these queries and give delegates the opportunity to network with experienced and knowledgeable practitioners.
